Histórias

There is something important and compelling about stories that bears considering in greater detail. Stories are marvelous means of summarizing experiences, of capturing and event and the surrounding context that seams essential. Stories are important cognitive events, for they encapsulate, into one compact package, information, knowledge, context, and emotion.

Um dia quando tiver um filho vou-lhe contar tantas histórias que ele haverá de se fartar de ser criança. Mais tarde sairá à rua, conhecerá outros jovens, meter-se-à nas mais diversas situações: talvez aí irá perceber.

Kludges

In engineering, when one builds a new device by tinkering with the old, modifying this, adding that, the result is called a "kludge", a haphazard, unstructured collection of parts that, nonetheless, functions well. Good scientists and engineers don't believe in kludges: When they need to make a new machine, they start over again. This may take longer, but the result is a device that is well structured, easy to understand, and easy to repair. Evolution doesn't care about the scientific method: Evolution builds kludges.

Acreditar em tudo

People are very good at believing in what they do, even in the face of contrary evidence, in the face of others who believe the opposite. Strong beliefs are important to human activity: Why else would we do so many things that we do?
